In 1974 a pint of milk was 4½p, a litre of petrol was 11p and in Nottingham, a fresh faced student called Colin Tompkins started his architectural degree course.

Fifty years later, Colin is retiring as a Director of Maber Architects and the longest serving member of staff; completing more than 37 years with the practice.

During his career at Maber, Colin has been instrumental in securing and delivering much of the business’s high tech manufacturing work for clients like Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW. A natural people-person, Colin has spent the last few years in Business Development and relationship building that has seen many new clients attracted to the business, alongside his genuine interest in nurturing established relationships.

On social occasions Colin has often been the life and soul of the party, memorably dressing up as Santa for the company’s family Christmas parties. In much quieter ways too he has consistently demonstrated his care and interest in his colleagues and he has frequently been the first to text or call people when they are sick or unable to work to see if there is anything more that he could do. Colin’s care for others has seen him driving the social value work of the company right up to his last week, both strategically and practically, and only a few weeks ago he was working with other members of the maber team to clear an allotment for a school in Leicester.

As a colleague, architect, raconteur and friend he will be missed around the office but Colin can reflect on a successful career, a job well done and look forward to a bright future in retirement.

Thank you Colin, we wish you the very best.
