Last week we held our first cycling event, the maber ride: “There and Back Again”, that saw teams cycling to and from our Nottingham & Leicester offices.

With an aim to host an inclusive ride – open to all abilities and to encourage more people to cycle, we also set about raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity. A cause very dear to us.

What an amazing success, and an incredibly inspiring day!

The 91km journey brought together 21 riders, 3 support crew members and numerous office bakers.  As we nurse our aching legs and sore bums, we’re delighted to reflect on this incredible achievement. For some, it was their first time tackling such a distance, making our collective success all the more rewarding.

Behind the scenes

Organising an event that was accessible to all skill levels was no small feat. It required meticulous planning and several trial runs to ensure the 91km route between our Nottingham and Leicester offices was perfect. Thanks to the dedication of our team members, Mark Pout, Peter Beeton, Gary Boydell and Ben Slipper, we refined a course that gave the cyclists options of a shorter circuit or a full loop of both offices and back, that included a delightful midway stop at The Greyhound Inn.

We also needed to ensure that our ride and riders were adequately insured and covered in case of any accidents. The event coincided with Cycling UK‘s National Bike Week, so by tying the two together, and thanks to the diligent efforts of Tim Boxford who coordinated the application and approval process, we were all covered and set to go.

And they're off!

We divided into four teams, setting off simultaneously from both office locations at 9am. Miraculously, everyone converged at the midway point right on time, sharing stories and experiences. The camaraderie and spirit displayed by those pushing their limits on the ride was truly inspiring.

Inspiring future cyclists

One of the goals was to grow our cycling community. Many riders in the event exceeded their own expectations, choosing to take on the challenge of riding the longer routes, with the support and encouragement of their fellow riders. An achievement that hopefully brings them immense pride, as it did to those watching.

We also hope this event has inspired other people to consider cycling more regularly, maybe even joining a local club or group or just getting out with friends.

Above & beyond

We didn’t just go “there and back”, we went “above & beyond” our expectations in so many ways. Not just the physical exertions from our valiant cyclists, we also completely smashed our fundraising target (twice!) and thanks to the overwhelming support, raised an impressive £2,349.

We are immensely grateful for every donation and for the enthusiastic participation from everyone at maber and all our friends and colleagues, whether peddling on the road, contributing to our office bake sales, or simply just donating, your efforts have made a significant impact. We say a heartfelt thank you to everyone.

So, what about next year?  –  Watch this space!
