Historical context
Called The Pencil Works, the new hub pays homage to Stapleford’s historic F. Chambers & Company Limited Pencil Works factory, which operated in the town until 1973.
The town centre streetscape will be enhanced by the contemporary appearance of the building and will benefit from an improved public realm through a carefully considered landscaping scheme.
Massing and scale have been thoughtfully designed to respect the site’s existing topography and surrounding buildings. Dividing the new building into two distinct blocks allows the ground floor plan to accommodate the site’s varying levels. The material palette draws inspiration from surrounding buildings, incorporating traditional materials in a contemporary design.
Setting the scene
A three-storey block at the Derby Road junction creates a focal point for the site. Positioned closest to the existing commercial buildings, it reinforces the intended function of the hub and integrates it into the heart of the town. As the topography rises up Victoria Street, the second block steps down to two storeys, respecting private dwellings on the opposite side of the street. New trees will create a ‘boulevard’ feel, partially screening this elevation from adjacent properties.
Active accommodation is placed along the Victoria Street elevation, while circulation and ancillary functions are located to the rear. This approach ensures that primary elevations remain lively and attractive, with business starter units at ground floor level strategically positioned to engage with the public space at the building’s front.
Spaces for all
A central feature of the project is the Makers’ Space, a communal facility for specialist craftspeople and artists. Designed to foster creativity and innovation, this space takes the form of a glazed box that captures the attention of passersby, enhancing the building’s presence and setting the tone for the enterprise hub.
The Pencil Works will create a unique and engaging destination that supports local businesses, fosters creativity, and enhances the character of Stapleford town centre. The combination of vibrant public spaces, flexible workspaces, and community-focused amenities will ensure that the Enterprise Hub becomes a thriving centre for collaboration and growth.
