maber are supporting Balfour Beatty in their digital construction strategy by providing BIM Management and BIM Coordination across the project. On a project of this magnitude, efficient delivery of BIM outputs is critical to its success. maber manage key documents such as the BIM Execution Plan (BEP) and Model Production Delivery Table (MPDT) whilst validating consultant compliance.

Alongside BIM management duties, maber are supporting on site construction by running clash avoidance procedures. Targeting typical design issues such as fire stopping validation and MEP services coordination, issues are tracked and resolved through a cloud based BCF tracking system ensuring amendments on site are avoided.

maber’s involvement on the project currently runs from July 2019 until February 2022.

The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is a brand new state of the art acute hospital in Sandwell, Birmingham. Balfour Beatty are completing the work on this complex project following the collapse of Carillion in 2018. With 10 floors, including 2 storeys of undercroft car park, 6 internal courtyards and a large winter garden at Level 5, the project poses many challenges in terms of on-site coordination.

maber have been key in guiding the design team through the effective completion of project BIM deliverables and enabling tangible digital benefits for both Balfour Beatty and the NHS Trust. I am happy the way maber managed the whole process, and they have use the right digital tools to manage the process of clash detection and COBie deliverables.

Early in the project, maber and Balfour Beatty organised a series of workshops between the Trust and the FM provider (Engie) to define the BIM scope of the project. This involved presenting plain English explanations of how maintainable asset data and proportionate LoD & LoI requirements would be crucial in driving a better outcome for all stakeholders.

maber are also running BIM Coordination on the project through a web based collaboration platform. Monthly BIM update meetings, providing KPI’s on clash detection & COBie data progress are essential for keeping the project on track. A suite of BIM documents produced by maber, including the project BIM Execution Plan, have recently played a role in Balfour Beatty’s successful BSI Kitemark assessment for ISO19650.
